Stop Pinning, Start Living: Unearthing Your Authentic Design DNA
(Because 'Trendy' is a Four-Letter Word).
Okay, my fabulous style-seekers! We've banished beige art, we've embraced the wallpaper revolution, and now? Now we get to the juicy centre of it all: YOU.
Because darling, all the bold choices and fearless design in the world mean nothing if they aren't a true reflection of the magnificent, unique creature inhabiting the space. Again, that’s YOU!
So many people get paralyzed by "What's my style?" They scroll endlessly, pin frantically, and end up with a home that looks like a confused Pinterest board threw up.
No more! Today, we're ditching the design dictionaries and the trend tyrants. We're going on an archaeological dig into your very soul to unearth your authentic, no-vanilla design DNA.

Stop Pinning, Start Living: Unearthing Your Authentic Design DNA (Because 'Trendy' is a Four-Letter Word).
Alright, you gorgeous humans. Let's talk about the elephant in the perfectly styled (or perhaps, perfectly chaotic) room: What IS your style?
Not what your favorite influencer tells you it is. Not what that glossy magazine dictates. Not what your mother-in-law subtly (or not-so-subtly) hints at. YOURS. The style that makes your heart beat a little faster, your eyes light up, and makes you feel utterly, deliciously at home.

The beige fog of ‘shoulds’ and ‘supposed tos’ can be thick, I know. But fear not, I'm here with my no-vanilla machete to help you hack through it.
Finding your style isn't about picking a label like "mid-century modern" or "boho chic" from a line-up. Those are starting points, perhaps, but your true style is a cocktail, a glorious, unique concoction mixed from the essence of YOU.
So, how do we bottle that magic?
The Wardrobe Autopsy (No, Really!):
Open your wardrobe. What do you actually wear? Not the aspirational stuff still with tags, but your go-tos.
Are you drawn to luxurious velvets or crisp linens? Bold patterns or solid, saturated colours? Tailored silhouettes or flowing, comfortable shapes? Sleek metallics or earthy, natural fibres?
Your clothes are often the most immediate, unconscious expression of your aesthetic preferences. That leopard print scarf isn't just for your neck, honey; it might be whispering about a future accent chair.

The "Makes My Soul Sing" Inventory:
Forget "sparking joy" for a second (though that's nice too). What objects, places, experiences, or even pieces of music make your soul do a little shimmy?
Is it the gritty energy of a bustling city street, or the serene calm of a forest?
The intricate detail of a vintage lace fan, or the clean lines of a brutalist building?
The vibrant chaos of a Moroccan souk, or the minimalist peace of a Japanese zen garden?
These aren't just preferences; they're clues to the feeling you want your home to evoke.

The "Hell No" List (Equally Important!):
Sometimes, knowing what you despise is just as illuminating as knowing what you love.
What design trends or specific items make you physically recoil? Is it fluffy pampas grass? Those "Live, Laugh, Love" signs? Overly distressed farmhouse furniture? Gleaming, sterile chrome?
Be honest. Be brutal. Your "hell no" list creates boundaries and helps you define what isn't you, making space for what is.
Channel Your Inner Adjective:
If your personality were a room, what three to five adjectives would describe it? Are you witty, dramatic, serene, quirky, sophisticated, playful, rebellious, comforting, glamorous, down-to-earth?
Now, how can your home embody those same adjectives? "Playful" doesn't have to mean primary colours and bouncy castles; it could be an unexpected art piece or a quirky wallpaper in the powder room.
Time Travel & Daydreams:
If you could live in any era, or any fictional world, where would it be and why? The opulence of Versailles? The cozy charm of a Hobbit hole? The sleek futurism of Star Trek? The artistic chaos of a 1920s Parisian salon?
Don't censor yourself. These fantasies tap into deep-seated desires for certain aesthetics and atmospheres.
Curate, Don't Just Collect (Your Pinterest Board Detox):
Go back to those Pinterest boards. But this time, instead of just re-pinning, ask why.
What specifically draws you to that image? Is it the colour palette? The texture of that one sofa? The way the light hits? The overall mood?
Start identifying recurring themes, not just pretty pictures.
Listen, your style isn't static. It will evolve as you do, and that's beautiful. It's not about achieving some "perfect" end-state dictated by others. It's about creating a home that is an authentic, evolving extension of your fabulous self. It's your story, told in textures, colours, objects, and light.
So, stop trying to fit into a pre-packaged design box. The most exciting, most compelling, most no-vanilla interiors are the ones that are unapologetically, idiosyncratically personal.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Pick ONE of the exercises above. Just one. Dive in this week. And then, in the comments below, tell me ONE adjective or ONE object that you feel truly screams "ME!" (by which I mean you, haha)
Let's start building our personal style dictionaries together.
Go forth and be unapologetically YOU.
Love, Penelope xx
